F.A.Q

Estradiol Patches

HOW SAFE ARE ESTRADIOL PATCHES?

While patches are usually easily tolerated by the body, there can be side effects that mainly
occur in the first months of use. The most common side effects are irritation at the site of
application, nausea, headaches, bloating, breast pain, and vaginal spotting.
Studies show that estrogen use can be linked to a higher risk of heart issues, blood clots,
dementia, and some cancers. Our experienced clinicians will go over the risk of possible
contraindications based on your health history, for example, coronary heart disease and
strokes, cancers with estrogen sensitivity and blood clots,

WHEN DOES THE ESTRADIOL PATCH START WORKING?

Within two weeks you should start seeing relief from symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia,
and night sweats. Then within 3 months, full relief should be expected. Your dosage will be
determined by your medical condition and response to treatment. We will check in with you
along your treatment journey, more frequently at the start, then monthly as symptoms subside.

WHERE ARE THE BEST PLACES TO APPLY ESTRADIOL PATCHES?

Patches are applied directly to your skin like a bandaid, it’s that simple. When you receive your
first treatment pack we provide a guide on how to best apply and maintain your patches. The
most common application sites are around the lower abdomen and upper buttock area. When
replacing your patch, it’s best to apply the new patch to a different area of your body, then rotate
between different areas each time.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FORGET TO CHANGE MY PATCH?

If you do forget to change your patch some minor menopausal symptoms may reoccur briefly,
for example, night sweats or hot flashes. The patches we supply have a durable adhesive so
the risk of it falling off is relatively low, but you can always cover the patch with a waterproof
bandaid for activities such as swimming. Patches do require consistency and long-term
commitment so having regular reminders to make them part of your routine is recommended.

Telehealth can be done in a range of ways, by phone, on chat, a written assessment, or even by video conference.  Our HIPAA compliant software enables patients to conveniently speak with their physician using their smartphone or computer, which means no more waiting rooms, delays or long travel times.

IS BLOODWORK REQUIRED FOR PETRA MD?

Blood tests are no longer considered necessary for the treatment of menopausal symptoms.
Our specialists recommend focussing on patient symptoms rather than relying on blood
hormone levels as per the guidelines provided by the American College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists (ACOG). Please refer to our blog page article for a deeper insight into how we
can effectively treat menopausal symptoms without the need for patient blood work.

Hormone Therapy

HOW DO I KNOW IF HORMONE THERAPY IS THE RIGHT OPTION FOR ME?

Hormone therapy can be highly effective in managing the negative aspects of menopause.
Taking the step towards HT is a highly personal decision that should be guided by symptoms,

health history, and lifestyle. Some health conditions like breast cancer and high blood pressure
may indicate that a particular technique or drug should not be used so this could affect your
suitability for hormone treatments. Our expert clinicians will consider your health profile before
they assess the best treatment option, as non-hormonal options may be a better fit.

WHAT ARE BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES?

Bioidentical hormones such as estradiol replicate the body’s natural hormones in a very
effective way. As we age, the human body naturally produces smaller amounts of key hormones
like estrogen which causes many of the menopause disorder symptoms. Hormone changes
cause many of the negative symptoms so balancing out hormone levels helps minimize many.

ARE THERE NON-HORMONAL TREATMENTS AVAILABLE?

Hormone replacement therapy is the most effective treatment for common menopausal
symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disruptions. For women who are
unable to take hormone replacement due to preexisting conditions, we offer paroxetine and
venlafaxine, which are both considered effective for the treatment of menopause symptoms.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS IN PETRA MD HORMONE THERAPY TREATMENTS?

The only ingredient in all of our treatments include ; bioidentical estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. As we
age, the human body naturally produces smaller amounts of key hormones like estrogen which
causes many of the menopause disorder symptoms. Bioidentical hormones such as estradiol
replicate the body’s natural hormones in a highly effective way.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS OF HORMONE THERAPY?

There are well-documented temporary side effects to taking hormone therapy, usually limited to
the first few weeks. Some common side effects are headaches, tenderness in the breast,
bloating, and spotting. Many of these issues are simply caused by your body adjusting to the
treatments and will naturally subside.

WILL A HISTORY OF BREAST CANCER AFFECT HORMONE THERAPY?

If you’ve experienced breast cancer in the past or have been recently diagnosed, unfortunately,
we do not recommend hormone therapy. The good news is that other effective non-hormonal
treatments are suitable for both breast cancer survivors and patients. When you complete your
individual health profile there is room to share any previous breast cancer history, this will help
our clinicians assess how to treat your individual case.

IS HORMONE THERAPY POSSIBLE AFTER A HYSTERECTOMY?

Yes, many women who have had a hysterectomy experience very positive benefits from HT.
However there are some differences in approach, for example, only estrogen may be needed
rather than progesterone if your uterus has been removed. Studies have shown that estrogen
taken by itself led to a lower breast cancer risk than a combination of progesterone and
estrogen.

Estradiol Pill

WHAT ARE ESTRADIOL TABLETS PRESCRIBED FOR?
Vaginal estradiol tablets are specifically prescribed for reducing the vaginal symptoms of
menopause, such as irritation, dryness, pain during sex, and urinary tract issues. They are
commonly inserted in the vagina via an easy applicator.
DO ESTRADIOL TABLETS HAVE THE SAME RISKS AS ESTROGEN THERAPY?

Typically estradiol tablets have fewer risks or side effects than systemic therapy. This is due to
the lower levels of estrogen hormones in the tablets. This means that blood estrogen levels
remain within the postmenopausal range when using the lower-dose tablet form.

HOW DO I MAKE PAYMENT?

Yes! Petra MD is the only national Women’s Health clinic that allows patients to use their insurance for all lab work. Since all of our physicians are properly licensed in each state, patients are able to receive a hefty discount. All we require is a small $25 processing fee.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ESTRADIOL TABLETS TO WORK?

Most patients experience improvement 2-4 weeks after starting treatment. Full relief from
symptoms typically takes up to 3 months.

CAN ESTRADIOL TABLETS BE INSERTED WITHOUT AN APPLICATOR?

A tablet should never be Inserted without an applicator. This can cause uneven or low doses of
medication which can have negative effects. We highly recommend that you reach out to one of
our clinicians if you have any questions regarding the application.
